About this website
Yale University is a private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut, founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School and renamed in 1718 for merchant Elihu Yale. It is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Yale enrolls roughly 6,500 undergraduates and about 8,000 graduate and professional students across its fourteen schools, including the School of Art, Divinity, Drama, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing and Public Health. Its residential college system, modeled on Oxford and Cambridge, groups undergraduates into fourteen communities. The Yale University Art Gallery, opened in 1832, was the first college art museum in America, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library holds a Gutenberg Bible. Yale athletes compete in the Ivy League and the football rivalry with Harvard dates to 1875.
