Akamai Technologies is a global content delivery network (CDN), cybersecurity, and cloud computing company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Founded in 1998 by MIT professor Tom Leighton (CEO since 2013), graduate student Daniel Lewin (who was killed on American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001), and Jonathan Seelig, Akamai pioneered the CDN industry. The name comes from the Hawaiian word for intelligent or clever. Akamai serves between 15% and 30% of all web traffic and operates one of the world's largest distributed computing platforms with over 4,200 points of presence (PoPs) across 134 countries.
