American Gas Association

The American Gas Association, abbreviated AGA, is the national trade organization representing the natural gas utility industry in the United States, founded in 1918 and headquartered in Washington. The organization represents over two hundred local natural gas distribution companies that deliver natural gas to residential, commercial, and industrial customers across all fifty states, collectively serving over seventy-eight million natural gas customers. Member services include safety program development, pipeline integrity management guidance, regulatory compliance support for federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration regulations, and energy efficiency program best practices for residential and commercial gas appliance efficiency. The association advocates on federal policy matters including pipeline safety legislation, natural gas export permitting for liquefied natural gas terminals, greenhouse gas emissions regulation, and infrastructure investment cost recovery mechanisms before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Through the AGA Foundation, the organization funds natural gas energy efficiency research, low-income customer energy assistance programs, and public education campaigns highlighting the role of natural gas in the American energy mix and its advantages as a lower-carbon bridge fuel in the transition toward renewable energy sources.
