About this website
Apache NetBeans is a free and open-source integrated development environment for Java, JavaScript, PHP, HTML5, C/C++, and other programming languages. Originally developed by Roman Stanek at Sun Microsystems in 1996 as Xelfi (the first Java IDE), NetBeans was acquired by Oracle through the Sun acquisition and later contributed to the Apache Software Foundation in 2016, becoming an Apache top-level project in 2019. Key features: Java development with full JDK support including Java SE, Java EE (Jakarta EE), and JavaFX, with intelligent code editor, refactoring (rename, move, extract), code completion, and incremental compilation. Maven and Gradle integration with full lifecycle support, dependency management, and multi-module project handling. PHP development with syntax highlighting, debugging (Xdebug integration), and framework support (Symfony, Laravel, Zend). JavaScript and HTML5 development with Node.js support, live HTML preview, and Chrome integration. C/C++ development with code assistance, debugging (GDB), and Make/CMake build support. NetBeans Platform for building modular rich client applications on top of the NetBeans module system. Maven-based architecture where the IDE itself and all plugins are Maven artifacts, enabling easy extension and customization. Visual designer for Swing GUI (Matisse) and JavaFX. Database tools with SQL editor, database explorer, and connection pooling. Git, Subversion, and Mercurial integration for version control. Debugging with breakpoints, conditional breakpoints, watchpoints, and step filters. Profiling with CPU profiler, memory profiler, and JDBC monitoring. JUnit and TestNG integration for unit testing. Cross-platform on Windows, macOS, and Linux with JDK-based portability. Open source under Apache 2.0.
