BitComet

BitComet is a free download client designed for handling BitTorrent, HTTP, and FTP protocols. It is built with C++ and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android platforms. The software focuses on providing a practical solution for users who need to download large files from peer-to-peer networks, direct HTTP links, or FTP servers. At its core, BitComet supports modern BitTorrent protocol features such as Magnet Links, HTTP Seeding, DHT networks, and UDP tracker Protocol v2. These allow users to initiate downloads without needing torrent files, find alternative sources when seeders are scarce, and communicate with trackers using lightweight UDP packets. The client also integrates multi-protocol downloading, enabling users to download the same file from both torrent swarms and direct HTTP/FTP sources simultaneously, which can speed up completion times. One of the key functionalities is Long-Term Seeding Technology. Many torrent downloads stall near completion when the original seeder disconnects or stops sharing. BitComet’s approach involves maintaining a persistent connection to the swarm and actively searching for new seeders, even after the download appears stuck. This technology tracks metadata about partial pieces and reconnects to new peers that may have joined later, helping users finish downloads that would otherwise remain incomplete. Intelligent Disk Caching is another practical feature. Frequent read/write operations to the hard drive during torrenting can degrade drive lifespan, especially on older hardware. BitComet buffers data in RAM before writing to disk, reducing the number of physical writes. The cache size is adjustable based on system memory, and the client prioritizes writing for actively downloaded pieces while keeping less urgent data in memory. T
