About this website
Buttercup is a free and open-source password manager that stores credentials securely using AES-256 encryption, offering cross-platform desktop and mobile applications with cloud synchronization. Created by Perry Mitchell and Sallar Kaboli in 2015, the project provides a lightweight alternative to commercial password managers. Key features include: AES-256 encryption (all credentials encrypted with AES-256 in GCM mode with PBKDF2 key derivation from master password), vault format (encrypted archive stored as plain text for portability, enabling storage on any cloud provider), cloud synchronization (sync vaults via WebDAV, Dropbox, Google Drive, Nextcloud, ownCloud, and local filesystem with automatic merge of concurrent changes), cross-platform (desktop apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux via Electron, mobile for iOS and Android, browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave), vault grouping (organize credentials into groups and subgroups for hierarchical organization), credential types (store usernames, passwords, credit cards, bank accounts, notes, and custom fields), password generator (configurable generation with length, character sets, and pronounceable options), auto-type (automatically type credentials into applications via global hotkey), search (full-text search across all vault entries with instant filtering), biometric unlock (Touch ID and fingerprint authentication on mobile), clipboard timeout (configurable clipboard clearing after copying passwords), and import and export (import from 1Password, KeePass, LastPass, Dashlane, and CSV).
