About this website

Byobu is a free and open-source terminal multiplexer enhancement layer that provides an intuitive, user-friendly interface on top of tmux or GNU Screen. Created by Dustin Kirkland (a former Ubuntu developer at Canonical, now VP of Product at Rancher Labs/SUSE) in 2009, Byobu was originally developed as part of the Ubuntu project and later became an independent project. The name comes from a Japanese term for decorative folding screens. Key features: ease of use: unlike raw tmux or screen, which require memorizing cryptic key sequences, this tool provides sensible defaults, a helpful status line, and an interactive menu system (press F9 for the menu). No configuration file editing required to get started. Status line: a two-line status bar at the bottom showing system information including hostname, Ubuntu release, CPU frequency, CPU load average, memory usage, swap usage, disk usage, network throughput (up/down speeds), battery level, Wi-Fi signal, time, date, and notification counts. Each status item is configurable. Window management: create, rename, switch, and close terminal windows (tabs) with simple key bindings. F2 creates a new window, F3 and F4 navigate between windows, Ctrl-F2 splits vertically, Shift-F2 splits horizontally. Session persistence: terminal sessions survive network disconnects, SSH timeouts, and system reboots. Reconnect to an existing session from any terminal. Scrollback: easy scrollback access via key combinations. Multiple backends: can run on top of tmux (default since version 5.x) or GNU Screen. Profile system: create and switch between multiple named profiles with different keybindings and status line configurations. Shell integration: notifications for long-running commands. Python/Shell. GPL-3.0.
