About this website
Canvas is a cloud-based learning management system (LMS) developed by Instructure, designed to make teaching and learning easier by providing an intuitive interface, robust tools, and seamless integrations. Launched by Instructure (founded by Devlin Daley and Brian Whitmer) in 2011, Canvas has become the fastest-growing LMS in higher education and K-12, serving over 30 million users at more than 6,000 institutions including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and state university systems. Key features include: course management (creating courses with modules, assignments, discussions, quizzes, and pages organized in a clear visual interface), SpeedGrader (efficient grading interface with inline annotation, rubric scoring, audio and video feedback, and turnaround time tracking), assignments and gradebook (weighted, points-based, or percentage grading with automatic calculation, missing and late submission policies, and grade posting policies), quizzes and assessments (multiple question types, question banks, timed quizzes, randomized questions, and New Quizzes engine with enhanced item types and analytics), discussion boards (threaded and focused discussions with video, audio, and file attachments plus peer review assignments), collaboration tools (Google Docs, Microsoft Office 365, and web conferencing via BigBlueButton and Zoom integration), course analytics (student engagement metrics, grade distribution, activity tracking, and early warning flags for at-risk students), Canvas Studio (video learning platform with interactive video, quizzes, and analytics), Canvas Catalog (course marketplace and registration for continuing education), LTI integrations (Learning Tools Interoperability for connecting third-party educational tools and publishers), mobile apps (Canvas Student, Canvas Teacher, and Canvas Parent for iOS and Android), accessibility (universal design with Ally for alternative formats and WCAG compliance), and open API (RESTful API and Live Events webhook system).
