Cap is an open source screen recording and video sharing application that combines three recording modes into a single desktop application, replacing separate tools for recording, editing, screenshot capture, and video hosting. Developed by Cap Software Inc, the application is trusted by over 40,000 teams, builders, and creators including organizations like Microsoft, Amazon, UC Berkeley, Figma, Coinbase, IBM, Dropbox, and Tesla. The Instant mode captures screen recordings with automatic upload to cloud sharing, generating shareable links as the recording happens. The Studio mode provides a full editing timeline with multi-track support, cursor zooming, click highlighting, background music, transitions, and brand customization for polished product demos and tutorials. The Screenshot mode captures annotated screenshots with marking tools, blurring, and instant sharing. Cap Pro adds AI-powered automatic summaries, chapter generation, transcript extraction, and multi-language subtitles. Team features include shared workspaces, custom branding, viewer analytics, and SSO authentication. Recordings are stored in user-controlled storage, supporting Google Drive, Amazon S3, and Cap Cloud. A migration tool imports existing libraries from Loom. SOC 2, HIPAA, and ISO 27001 compliance certifications are in progress. Available as a native desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with a Chrome browser extension for in-browser recording.
