About this website

Chromatic is a visual testing and review platform for frontend teams created by Chroma, the same company behind Storybook, founded by Tom Coleman in 2017, providing automated visual regression testing, UI review workflows, and continuous integration for component libraries, designed to integrate seamlessly with Storybook for capturing, comparing, and reviewing UI changes across the development lifecycle, adopted by Adobe, Bit Cloud, and Tripadvisor for maintaining visual consistency across their design systems. The visual regression testing captures pixel-perfect snapshots of every component story at every commit, automatically comparing new snapshots against approved baselines to detect unintended visual changes caused by code modifications, CSS updates, dependency updates, or rendering engine differences, with the comparison algorithm ignoring anti-aliasing differences, rendering artifacts, and animation timing to surface only meaningful visual regressions, while supporting multiple viewport sizes and themes for comprehensive coverage. The UI review workflow enables designers and product managers to review and approve visual changes through a web-based interface, with comment threads on specific UI elements, side-by-side comparison of old and new snapshots, approve and reject actions that update the baseline, and integration with GitHub pull requests that blocks merges until visual changes are reviewed. The CI integration runs visual tests on every push and pull request through GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, or any CI system. The cross-browser testing across Chrome and Firefox. The history for time-travel through visual changes. Designed by Chroma. Designed for frontend teams.
