About this website

Decap CMS, formerly known as Netlify CMS, is an open-source Git-based content management system created by Mathias Biilmann and the Netlify team in 2015, providing a user-friendly editing interface for managing content stored in Git repositories, designed to work seamlessly with static site generators including Hugo, Gatsby, Eleventy, Next.js, and Jekyll, enabling non-technical content editors to create, edit, and publish content through a visual interface without touching code or using Git commands, adopted by over one hundred thousand websites for content management. The Git-based architecture means content is stored as Markdown or JSON files in a Git repository, with the CMS reading and writing directly to the repository through the GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket APIs, providing full version history, audit trails, branching and merging workflows, and collaboration through pull requests, while eliminating the need for a separate database server or content delivery infrastructure. The editorial interface provides a dashboard showing all content collections with filtering and search, a rich text editor with Markdown and visual editing modes, an image editor with cropping and resizing, a media library for managing uploads, draft creation and review workflows with editorial roles including writers, editors, and administrators, and scheduled publishing through Git branch strategies. The configuration is defined through a single YAML file specifying content collections, fields, validation rules, and editorial workflow settings, with custom preview templates built in React showing content editors exactly how their content will appear on the live site. The identity management through external providers including GitHub, GitLab, and email. The authentication through Netlify Identity. Designed for static site teams.
