DOSBox is a free and open-source MS-DOS emulator that runs older DOS software and games on modern operating systems. Created in 2002 by Peter Veenstra (Qbix) and Sjoerd van der Berg (Harekiet), DOSBox has become the standard way to run classic DOS applications and is officially used by GOG.com and Steam for distributing retro games. Key features: full x86 CPU emulation including 8086, 80286, 80386, 80486, and Pentium instruction sets with real mode, protected mode, and virtual 8086 mode. DOS environment emulation including BIOS services, interrupt handlers, device drivers, and memory management (conventional, XMS, EMS). Graphics emulation including CGA, EGA, VGA, SVGA, VESA VBE, and Hercules modes. Sound emulation including PC speaker, AdLib, Sound Blaster (1.0-16), Gravis Ultrasound, and MPU-401 MIDI. File system mounting host directories as DOS drives. Save states for saving and restoring emulator state at any point. Cycle-accurate CPU timing with adjustable speed (cycles) for matching original hardware. Screen scaling with nearest neighbor, bilinear, and HQ upscaling. MT-32 emulation via Munt. Networking via NE2000 and IPX for multiplayer. DOSBox-X fork (released 2019 by joncampbell123) adds PC-98 emulation, true DOS boot, and improved VESA modes. DOSBox Staging fork with modernized codebase. The latest stable release is version 0.74-3. Cross-platform on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Open source under GPL.
