About this website
Elasticsearch is a distributed, RESTful search and analytics engine created by Shay Banon in 2010 as the successor to his earlier Compass project, built on Apache Lucene and developed through Elastic, the company he co-founded with Steven Schuurman and Uri Boness, headquartered in Mountain View and Amsterdam, providing full-text search, structured search, analytics, and logging capabilities at scale, capable of indexing and searching billions of documents with near real-time latency, adopted by Wikipedia, GitHub, Netflix, Uber, and over ten thousand companies for search, logging, security analytics, and business intelligence. The inverted index data structure built on Apache Lucene provides the foundation for full-text search, with text analysis through configurable analyzers including tokenizers that split text into terms, character filters that modify input text, and token filters that transform, add, or remove tokens, supporting language-specific analysis with stemming, stop words, synonyms, and phonetic matching, enabling search relevance tuning through BM25 scoring, boost factors, function scores, and multi-match query types. The distributed architecture shards indices across multiple nodes with automatic shard rebalancing, replica shards for high availability and read scaling, and cluster state management through elected master nodes, enabling horizontal scaling from single-node deployments to hundreds of nodes handling petabytes of data. The aggregation framework provides bucket aggregations for grouping documents by terms, ranges, dates, histograms, and geospatial boundaries, with metric aggregations for computing statistics including min, max, average, sum, cardinality, percentiles, and statistical moments, enabling real-time analytics on large datasets. The Kibana visualization platform. The Logstash for data ingestion. The Beats for lightweight data shipping. Designed by Shay Banon. Designed for search and analytics.
