FOG Project Computer Imaging

FOG (Free Opensource Ghost) Project is a free, open-source computer imaging and cloning solution designed to help network administrators manage the deployment and maintenance of large fleets of computers. Created by Chuck Syperski and Peter Gilge in 2007, FOG has over 1,800 stars as of 2026 and is used by thousands of schools, universities, enterprises, and government agencies worldwide for enterprise-scale disk imaging and computer management. Key features include: disk imaging and cloning (capturing and deploying complete disk or partition images via network boot, supporting multicast for simultaneous deployment to hundreds of computers), PXE network boot (clients boot via PXE into a minimal Linux environment for imaging without installation media), image management (creating, storing, and versioning disk images with single-partition and multi-partition support, raw and PartImage formats, and compression), multicast deployment (bandwidth-efficient multicast imaging for simultaneous deployment to many machines, with configurable session management), client management (registering and managing computers with MAC address, hostname, and hardware inventory), task scheduling (scheduling imaging tasks for off-hours deployment, recurring tasks, and wake-on-LAN for remote power-on), snapins (deploying software packages, scripts, and configurations to managed clients post-imaging), printer management (centralized printer deployment and driver management via group policies and snapins), user tracking (logging user login and logout on managed machines), host registration (automatic host registration via PXE boot with hardware inventory including CPU, RAM, disk, and GPU information), groups and roles (organizing hosts into groups for batch operations and role-based access control for technicians), and web-based interface (centralized management console for all imaging, deployment, and client management operations via PHP-based web GUI).
