About this website

FreeType is a freely available software library to render fonts, providing a fast, high-quality, and easy-to-use rasterizer for TrueType, OpenType, Type 1, CFF, WOFF, WOFF2, PCF, BDF, PFR, and other font formats. Originally developed by David Turner, Robert Wilhelm, and Werner Lemberg in 1996, FreeType has become the de facto font rendering engine on virtually all operating systems including Linux, Android, iOS, macOS, and embedded systems, with over 3,500 stars as of 2026. Key features include: multi-format support (TrueType, OpenType, PostScript Type 1, Compact Font Format CFF, CFF2, WOFF, WOFF2, TrueType Collections TTC, OpenType Collections, PCF, BDF, PFR, Windows FNT and FON, and raw PFR), glyph rendering (monochrome, anti-aliased grayscale, and LCD-optimized subpixel rendering with configurable hinting levels), hinting (TrueType bytecode interpreter, Auto-Hinter for fonts without hinting instructions, and Light hinting mode for modern flat design), subpixel rendering (RGB and BGR subpixel layouts with configurable filtering for LCD displays, plus patent-free Harmony subpixel rendering), variable fonts (OpenType variation support for adjustable weight, width, slant, and optical size axes with named instances), color fonts (SBIX, COLR/CPAL, and SVG color glyph support for emoji and multi-color typography), OpenType features (access to GSUB and GPOS tables for ligatures, contextual alternates, kerning, and positioning, typically used via HarfBuzz), CFF2 support (Compact Font Format 2 for variable CFF fonts with improved compression), WOFF2 decompression (built-in Brotli decompression for WOFF2 web font format), emboldening (synthetic bold rendering for fonts without bold variants), slanting (synthetic oblique rendering), stroke rendering (outline stroking for outline-only font display), and memory efficiency (configurable memory management with minimal allocation and configurable cache subsystem for glyph caching).
