About this website

Gentoo Linux is a free and open-source Linux distribution built using the Portage package management system, designed for users who want fine-grained control by compiling all software from source code. Named after the Gentoo penguin (the fastest swimming penguin), Gentoo was created by Daniel Robbins in 2000 and is maintained by the Gentoo Foundation. Key features: source-based compilation where all packages are compiled from source with user-specified compiler flags (CFLAGS) and USE flags, enabling optimization for specific hardware and feature customization. Portage package manager (Python-based, inspired by FreeBSD Ports) handling source download, dependency resolution, compilation, installation, and cleanup, with support for binary packages. USE flags provide granular feature toggles that enable or disable optional features during compilation (X, alsa, ssl, python, doc, and hundreds more). System profiles defining default USE flags, package masks, and architecture-specific settings. Additional package repositories called overlays managed via eselect-repository. Live ebuilds for installing software directly from upstream Git, Subversion, or Mercurial repositories. Compilation for exact CPU architecture with march=native maximizing performance. Rolling release with continuous updates and no version milestones. Architecture support including x86, x86_64, ARM, ARM64, PPC, SPARC, MIPS, s390x, and RISC-V. Choice of init system with both systemd and OpenRC fully supported. Catalyst tool for building custom installation media and stages.
