The Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers, abbreviated GAPP, is a trade association representing the Alaska pollock fishing and processing industry, headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The organization was established to promote wild-caught Alaska pollock as a premium protein ingredient in domestic and international markets and to differentiate genuine Alaska pollock from competing whitefish species including Russian-caught pollock and other substitutes. Alaska pollock is one of the largest commercial fisheries in the world by volume, with annual harvests typically exceeding three billion pounds from the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska, managed under federal catch limits established by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to ensure sustainable harvest levels. Member companies include the largest at-sea catcher-processor vessels and shore-based processing plants operated by companies like Trident Seafoods, Maruha Nichiro, Nissui, and American Seafoods. The association conducts consumer marketing campaigns highlighting the nutritional attributes of Alaska pollock including its lean protein content averaging twenty grams per serving, omega-3 fatty acid levels, and its Marine Stewardship Council sustainability certification, while also working with food manufacturers, restaurant chains, and institutional foodservice operators to increase utilization of genuine Alaska pollock in surimi, fish sticks, fillets, and breaded portions.
