About this website
GNOME is a free and open-source desktop environment for Unix-like operating systems, created in 1999 by Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena as a free software alternative to proprietary desktop environments. As the default desktop environment for major Linux distributions including Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, and SUSE, GNOME is used by millions of people worldwide. The project is maintained by the Foundation and a global community of contributors, with major releases every 6 months (in March and September). Key features include: GNOME Shell (the modern desktop interface with an Activities Overview for launching applications and managing windows, a top bar with system menu and clock, and dynamic workspaces that are created and destroyed on demand), GTK toolkit (the cross-platform widget toolkit supporting custom CSS theming and accessible widgets), Mutter (the compositing window manager using Wayland or X11, with support for hardware acceleration, fractional scaling, and HDR), GSettings and dconf (the configuration system), Online Accounts (centralized integration with Google, Microsoft, Nextcloud, and other cloud services), Evince (document viewer for PDF and PostScript), Files/Nautilus (file manager with integrated search), Software (application store for Flatpak and system packages), Terminal and Console (terminal emulators), Text Editor (with syntax highlighting), Extensions system (community-developed extensions modifying Shell behavior via the extensions website), accessibility features (screen reader Orca, on-screen keyboard, high contrast themes), and internationalization supporting over 80 languages.
