About this website
GNU Emacs is an extensible, customizable, free and libre text editor and computing environment developed as part of the GNU Project by the Free Software Foundation. Originally created by Richard Stallman and Guy Steele in 1976 at MIT, Emacs has evolved into one of the longest-lived and most powerful text editors in computing history, with the latest version being Emacs 30.1. At its core is the Emacs Lisp programming language, a dialect of Lisp that enables users to extend, customize, and program virtually every aspect of the editor, from simple key bindings to complete applications. The legendary package ecosystem includes Org-mode for organizing notes, tasks, and documents with literate programming capabilities; Magit for Git version control integration widely considered the best Git interface on any platform; LSP-mode and Eglot for language server protocol integration providing IDE-like features; Projectile for project management; Company for auto-completion; and hundreds of other packages available through MELPA and GNU ELPA package repositories. Emacs runs on GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows, and BSD systems, supporting GUI and terminal interfaces. Key features include dired for directory editing, TRAMP for remote file editing over SSH, eshell for shell interaction, and the self-documenting help system. Emacs also includes built-in support for email via Gnus, IRC via ERC, web browsing via EWW, and even games like Tetris.
