About this website
Hemingway Editor is a desktop and web-based writing tool that analyzes text for readability and clarity, helping writers make their writing bold and clear. Created by Adam Long and Ben Long in 2013, the tool is named after Ernest Hemingway, known for his concise, straightforward writing style. The app is available as a free web version and a paid desktop version for Windows and macOS. Key features: readability analysis: the app assigns a readability grade level to your text using the Automated Readability Index. A good target is grade 10 for a broad, commercial audience. The tool highlights sentences that are hard to read. Highlighting system: complex or hard-to-read sentences are highlighted in yellow (very hard to read) or red (extremely hard to read). Adverbs are highlighted in blue, with suggestions to reduce them. Passive voice sentences are highlighted in green. Complex words and phrases are highlighted in purple with simpler alternatives. Statistics: word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time. Adverb count, passive voice count, and reading grade level displayed in real-time. Write mode: distraction-free writing mode that hides the highlighting and analysis until you switch to Edit mode. Edit mode: full editing mode with all highlighting and statistics visible. Export to HTML or Markdown. Direct publishing: publish directly to WordPress or Medium from the desktop app. Markdown support: write in Markdown format. Clipboard support: paste text directly or copy the analysis to clipboard. Hemingway Editor 3.0: added AI-powered sentence rewriting suggestions, dark mode, and the ability to work with longer documents. Desktop app runs offline. JavaScript/Electron. Proprietary.
