About this website

ICAI, the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence, is a Dutch national organization that orchestrates collaboration among universities, research institutes, companies, and government bodies to advance artificial intelligence research, education, and practical deployment. Its core function is to build and sustain an integrated AI knowledge and talent ecosystem within the Netherlands, ensuring the country remains at the forefront of AI developments globally. The center operates through a network of specialized "Labs" that each focus on a particular AI domain or application. These Labs are typically co‑located at a university and funded by industry partners, allowing PhD students, postdocs, and engineers to work on real‑world problems alongside academic researchers. For example, one Lab might concentrate on AI for healthcare diagnostics, another on autonomous systems for logistics, and another on natural language processing for Dutch language technologies. By embedding industry experts directly into academic settings, ICAI facilitates the rapid transfer of research breakthroughs into marketable products and services. In addition to the Labs, ICAI organizes thematic "Units" that address broader challenges requiring cross‑disciplinary coordination. These Units might tackle issues such as AI ethics, data sovereignty, or the societal impact of automation. They produce white papers, host workshops, and create guidelines for responsible AI deployment. The center also runs an annual event series—workshops, conferences, and hackathons—that draws participants from academia, startups, large corporations, and public agencies to share findings and discuss emerging trends. Education and talent development are central to ICAI’s mission. It sponsors dedicated master's and PhD track
