About this website

Joplin is a free, open-source note-taking and to-do application with synchronization capabilities, designed as a privacy-focused alternative to Evernote and OneNote. Created by Laurent Cozic in 2017 and headquartered in Toulouse, France, Joplin has grown to over 10 million downloads. Key features: Markdown editor with live preview, supporting standard Markdown syntax plus extended features including tables, task lists, footnotes, math equations (KaTeX), diagrams (Mermaid), code blocks with syntax highlighting, and custom CSS styling. Rich text (WYSIWYG) editor for users who prefer a visual editing experience, with seamless conversion between Markdown and rich text. Notebooks (notebooks) and tags for organizing notes hierarchically, with support for nested notebooks and multi-tag assignment. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) using AES-256 and SHA-256, ensuring that only devices with the encryption password can read notes, even if the sync server is compromised. Synchronization with multiple backends: Joplin Cloud (official, $2-6/month), Dropbox, OneDrive, Nextcloud, WebDAV, Amazon S3, local filesystem, and self-hosted Joplin Server. Full-text search across all notes and attachments with advanced query syntax. Note attachments: attach images, PDFs, audio recordings, and any file type with inline preview for images. Web Clipper browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) for clipping web pages, articles, and screenshots directly into Joplin. Templates for creating reusable note structures. Plugins: over 100 community plugins extending functionality (Kanban boards, calendars, reminders, enhanced Markdown, draw.io integration). Multi-device sync: desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux), mobile (iOS, Android), and terminal (joplin-cli). REST API for programmatic access and integration. Export and import in JEX (native), Markdown, HTML, and PDF. Open source under AGPL-3.0.
