About this website

KiCad is a free open-source software suite for electronic design automation EDA that facilitates the design of electronic schematics and PCB layout. Originally developed by Jean-Pierre Charras in 1992 at the Universite de Grenoble, KiCad is now maintained with sponsorship from CERN, Linux Foundation, and major electronics companies. Key features: Eeschema schematic editor for creating electrical schematics with hierarchical design support, multi-page schematics, custom symbols, and Electrical Rules Check ERC. Pcbnew PCB layout editor with up to 32 copper layers, interactive push-and-shove router, differential pair routing, length tuning for high-speed signals, and Design Rules Check DRC. Integrated 3D viewer for mechanical verification with STEP and VRML export. Comprehensive symbol and footprint libraries with over 10,000 entries plus custom library creation tools. Professional Gerber, drill, and pick-and-place file generation. ngspice integration for analog circuit simulation including transient, AC, DC, and Monte Carlo analysis. Configurable Bill of Materials generation with custom templates. Python and C++ plugin API for custom extensions and automation. Automatic copper pour with thermal reliefs. Interactive length tuning for DDR, PCIe, and USB routing. Text-based file formats enabling Git version control of schematics and layouts. Cross-platform on Windows, macOS, and Linux with Flatpak distribution. Used for boards from simple breakout boards to complex multi-thousand-component designs.
