About this website

kuku is a local-first, offline-capable Markdown workspace designed specifically for macOS. Built with Tauri instead of Electron, it offers a native, lightweight experience while retaining full compatibility with plain Markdown files. The application functions as a personal knowledge base and writing tool, enabling users to create, link, and explore interconnected notes through wikilinks, backlinks, and an interactive graph view. All data remains on the user’s local machine — no cloud synchronization, no vendor lock-in, and no required internet connection for core functionality. A key feature of kuku is its integration of AI-powered editing, search, and linking capabilities. These are designed with transparency in mind: every AI-generated change is presented as a reviewable diff, similar to the “Cursor-style” interface, allowing users to accept, reject, or modify each suggestion before it is applied. This approach gives users full control over their content while still benefiting from automated assistance, such as finding relevant notes, rewriting paragraphs, or suggesting connections between different vaults. The workspace is built on plain Markdown files stored in any local directory. This means users are not locked into a proprietary format: notes can be opened, edited, and managed with any standard Markdown editor, version control system like Git, or file-syncing service like Dropbox or iCloud. kuku enhances this open ecosystem by adding structured linking (wikilinks), backlink previews, and a real-time graph that visualizes how notes relate to one another. These features are especially useful for research, project management, meeting notes, and long-form writing. kuku is open source, hosted on GitHub, and has an active community roadmap and changelog.
