About this website
local.ai is a native desktop application designed to let users run, manage, and experiment with large language models (LLMs) entirely on their own computer, without any internet connection or cloud dependency. The primary goal is to make local AI inference accessible to anyone, regardless of technical background. Users can download, organize, and run dozens of open-source models (such as WizardLM, Llama, Mistral, and many more) through a straightforward graphical interface. No command-line knowledge, Python environment setup, or GPU hardware is required — the app performs all computations using the CPU, adapting to the number of available threads on the user's machine. This means even laptops without dedicated graphics cards can run powerful language models, albeit at slower speeds compared to GPU-accelerated setups. The application supports multiple GGML quantization levels — q4, q5.1, q8, and f16 — allowing users to trade off between model size, memory usage, and output quality. For example, a 7B parameter model quantized to q4 can fit in under 4 GB of RAM, enabling smooth operation on machines with 8 GB or more of system memory. The user can start a conversation with a model in just two clicks: first select the model from the local collection, then click "Start Session". A built-in chat interface appears immediately, where prompts and responses are streamed token by token. The entire process is private; no data ever leaves the user's computer. local.ai provides a centralized model management system. Users can specify any local directory as the model storage location. The app includes a resumable concurrent downloader that can fetch models from Hugging Face or other sources, with pause and resume capabilities. Downloaded models are automatically cataloged by name, siz
