About this website

LosslessCut is a cross-platform, GUI-based tool for lossless video and audio editing, created by Mikael Finstad (mifi). It is designed for extremely fast cutting, trimming, and splitting of video and audio files without re-encoding, making it ideal for extracting segments from long recordings (like screen captures, surveillance footage, podcast recordings, and drone footage) in a fraction of a second rather than waiting for a re-encode. The fundamental principle of LosslessCut is that it operates on the compressed stream directly: instead of decoding each frame, applying cuts, and re-encoding (which is slow and introduces quality loss), LosslessCut simply copies the compressed data packets for the selected segment, remuxing them into a new container. This means that cutting a 1-hour 4K video down to a 10-minute clip takes only seconds, and the output quality is identical to the input (hence lossless). Key features include: support for a wide range of container formats including MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG-TS, FLV, and more, lossless cutting of video and audio tracks (with frame-accurate or keyframe-accurate segment extraction), merging and concatenation of multiple video files (stitching segments together without re-encoding), track selection (choosing which video, audio, and subtitle tracks to include in the output), segment export with custom naming and batch processing, thumbnail and waveform preview for navigation, support for hardware-accelerated decoding (via FFmpeg hardware decoders), smart cut mode (cutting at exact frame boundaries by re-encoding only the frames near cut points while keeping the rest lossless), timecode and frame number display, support for editing metadata (title, date, GPS coordinates), and support for 360-degree and VR video formats. Built with Electron and based on FFmpeg. As of 2026, LosslessCut has over 28,000 stars.
