About this website

Mastodon is a decentralized social networking platform that operates as part of the fediverse, a network of interconnected servers using the ActivityPub protocol. Unlike traditional centralized platforms, Mastodon allows users to choose from thousands of independently operated servers (instances) to create an account, each with its own rules, moderators, and community culture. The platform focuses on user privacy, content moderation, and community-driven governance. Users can publish short-form posts called "toots" with a maximum character limit of 500 characters (adjustable per server). Each toot can include images, videos, audio files, and custom emojis. A key feature is the ability to mark posts with content warnings, hiding sensitive or spoiler material behind a clickable label. Posts can be tagged with hashtags to facilitate discovery and organization. Users can reply to, reblog (similar to retweet), and favorite toots. Mastodon provides several timelines: the Home timeline shows posts from users you follow; the Local timeline displays public posts from users on the same server; the Federated timeline aggregates public posts from all servers your instance knows about. This structure gives users control over their information flow, avoiding algorithmic curation that prioritizes engagement over relevance. The platform supports direct messaging (private mentions), lists for organizing followed accounts, and mute/block functions for unwanted interactions. Users can also create polls within toots, attach location data, and schedule posts. Moderation tools allow server admins to set rules, ban users or instances, and apply content filters. Mastodon is free and open-source software, developed by a nonprofit organization (Mastodon gGmbH) and maintained by a global communit
