About this website

Maxima is a free open-source computer algebra system for symbolic and numerical mathematical computations, descended from Macsyma developed at MIT in the late 1960s. Maintained by the Maxima community since 1998 on SourceForge, Maxima provides a free alternative to Mathematica and Maple. Key features: symbolic computation with exact arithmetic, rational numbers, algebraic simplification, polynomial factorization, and expansion. Calculus including symbolic differentiation and integration, Taylor series, limits, and series summation. Linear algebra with determinants, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, matrix inverse, and SVD. Equation solving for algebraic equations and systems of equations symbolically plus numerical root finding. ODE and PDE solving including initial value and boundary value problems. 2D and 3D plotting via Gnuplot with function, parametric, implicit, contour, and vector field plots. Maxima programming language with user-defined functions, loops, conditionals, and blocks. wxMaxima cross-platform GUI with typeset mathematical output and notebook interface. Floating-point evaluation with arbitrary precision via underlying Lisp bignum. Extensive trigonometric and hyperbolic simplification. TeXmacs integration for publishing-quality mathematical documents. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
