About this website
Model Viewer is an open-source web component developed by Google for easily displaying interactive 3D models on the web and in augmented reality. The current version 4.3.1 ships as a single script tag import that works as a standard HTML element, supporting GLB and glTF model formats with Draco mesh compression, KHR_materials extensions, and environment image lighting (HDR). Key features include: built-in camera controls (orbit, pan, zoom) with touch and keyboard support, configurable camera orbit and target positions, shadow rendering with adjustable intensity, environment-image based lighting with preset studio and exterior environments, poster image support for lazy loading, staging animations (auto-rotate, camera orbits), exposure control, tonemapping (ACES Filmic, Neutral), and configurable field of view. For AR, the component uses WebXR Device API with HitTest for surface placement, DOM Overlays for AR UI, and falls back to Scene Viewer (Android) or Quick Look (iOS) for devices without WebXR. The addon package model-viewer-effects provides post-processing effects including bloom, depth of field, and noise. Available as @google/model-viewer on npm with minified gzipped size of approximately 170KB. Browser support: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (macOS and iOS). Licensed under Apache 2.0.
