About this website
MuseScore is a free and open-source music notation software for creating, playing, and printing sheet music. Originally created in 2002 by Werner Schweer as MusE (a MIDI sequencer), the notation component was split off and rebranded as MuseScore in 2008. The project is now maintained by the Muse Group, headquartered in Limassol, Cyprus. Key features: WYSIWYG score editor with full support for standard music notation including notes, rests, time signatures, key signatures, clefs, dynamics, articulations, slurs, ties, grace notes, chord symbols, guitar tablature, and percussion notation. Unlimited staves and voices per staff for complex orchestral and choral scores. Playback via the built-in synthesizer using SoundFont (.sf2, .sf3), SFZ, and Muse Sounds sample libraries, with support for VST instruments and effects (MuseScore 4). Mixer for adjusting volume, pan, and mute/solo for each instrument. Piano keyboard and guitar fretboard input. MusicXML import and export for interoperability with Finale, Sibelius, and Dorico. MIDI import and export. Guitar Pro (.gp3-gp5) import. PDF export with professional engraving quality. Parts extraction for individual instrument parts from a full score with automatic transposition for transposing instruments. MuseScore 4 (released December 2022) featuring a redesigned UI, Muse Sounds orchestral library (free, recorded at Teldex Studio Berlin), VST3 plugin support, and a new engraving engine with improved spacing and collision avoidance. MuseScore.com community platform for sharing scores online with over 1 million public scores. Mobile apps for iOS and Android for score viewing and basic editing. Cross-platform on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Open source under GPL-3.0.
