About this website

OpenSearch is an open-source search and analytics suite derived from Elasticsearch and Kibana, maintained by the OpenSearch Project under the Linux Foundation. Created in 2021 in response to Elastic changing Elasticsearch licensing from Apache 2.0 to SSPL, OpenSearch is backed by Amazon Web Services (AWS), with contributions from SAP, Capital One, Logz.io, and others. Key features: distributed full-text search and analytics engine built on Apache Lucene, providing near-real-time search across large volumes of structured and unstructured data. RESTful API for indexing, searching, and managing data with JSON over HTTP. Advanced search capabilities including full-text search with relevance scoring, boolean queries, phrase matching, fuzzy search, autocomplete, highlighting, and aggregations for analytics. SQL and PPL (Piped Processing Language) query interfaces for users familiar with SQL syntax. Anomaly detection using machine learning algorithms (Random Cut Forest) for identifying outliers in time-series data. Index management including rollover, shrink, split, and force-merge operations with automated policies. Security plugin providing authentication (Active Directory, LDAP, SAML, OpenID Connect), authorization with role-based access control (RBAC), audit logging, and field-level security. Alerting framework for monitoring data and triggering notifications based on thresholds and conditions. Cross-cluster replication for disaster recovery and data locality. Snapshot and restore for backup and migration. OpenSearch Dashboards (forked from Kibana) for data visualization including time-series charts, geospatial maps, graphs, and custom dashboards. Observability features for log analytics, trace analytics, and metrics monitoring. Compatible with most Elasticsearch 7.10 APIs for easy migration. Cross-platform via Docker, Kubernetes, tarballs, and AWS managed service. Open source under Apache 2.0.
