About this website
Pillow is the friendly fork of the Python Imaging Library (PIL), adding support for opening, manipulating, and saving many different image file formats. Originally created by Fredrik Lundh as PIL in 1995, Pillow was forked in 2010 by Alex Clark and Plinio H S Varela to maintain and extend the library after PIL development stalled. Pillow is now the standard image processing library for Python. Key features: comprehensive image format support including JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, WebP, ICO, DDS, ICNS, and over 30 formats for both reading and writing. Image object with pixel access, crop, resize, rotate, transpose, and transform operations. Image enhancement including filters (blur, sharpen, edge enhance, find edges), color adjustments (brightness, contrast, saturation, color balance), and point operations. Image drawing module for creating shapes (lines, rectangles, ellipses, polygons, arcs), text rendering with TrueType and OpenType fonts, and bitmap fills. ImageChops for channel operations including add, subtract, multiply, screen, overlay, and difference. ImageOps for common operations including autocontrast, equalize, grayscale, invert, and expand. ImageFilter for convolution kernels, Gaussian blur, rank filters, and median filters. ImageTk for displaying images in Tkinter GUI applications. Thumbnail generation and batch processing. ICC profile support for color management. Sequential image support for animated GIF and PNG. Exif metadata reading and writing. Plugin architecture for adding custom image format support.
