About this website

Pitivi is a free and open-source non-linear video editor built on the GStreamer multimedia framework and designed for the GNOME desktop environment. Initially developed in 2004 by Edward Hervey (who later joined Collabora and worked on GStreamer core), the project has been maintained with contributions from Collabora, the GNOME community, and individual developers. Pitivi is designed to be simple, intuitive, and reliable, targeting casual users who need quick video editing without a steep learning curve. Key features: GStreamer-based: the entire video processing pipeline runs on GStreamer, the powerful open-source multimedia framework. This provides excellent codec support, hardware acceleration, and reliability. GES (GStreamer Editing Services): the underlying library for non-linear editing, providing a robust API for timeline manipulation. Timeline editing: drag-and-drop clips onto the timeline, trim, split, and move clips. Ripple editing (automatically shifting subsequent clips when trimming), roll editing (moving the cut point between two clips), and slip editing (changing the visible portion without changing duration). Transitions: crossfades and fade transitions between clips with adjustable duration. Effects: video and audio effects powered by GStreamer elements, including blur, edge detection, kaleidoscope, mirror, sepia, chroma hold, and audio equalization. Live preview: real-time preview of effects and transitions in the viewer window. Rendering: export to various formats including WebM, MKV, MP4, Ogg Theora, and custom GStreamer pipelines. Configurable bitrate, framerate, and resolution. Project management: save and load project files in xges format. Nested timelines. Integration with GNOME: follows GNOME Human Interface Guidelines, with a clean, distraction-free interface. Clip thumbnails and waveforms on the timeline for easy navigation. Undo and redo with unlimited history. Python/GTK. LGPL-2.1+.
