PygmalionAI is an open-source artificial intelligence project designed to facilitate interactive text-based experiences such as chat, role-play, and adventure. The platform hosts a large and active community where users can engage with a wide variety of fictional characters, called "Cards," created by a growing ecosystem of passionate creators. As of the latest data, the service supports over 101,200 registered users, more than 3,950 character cards, over 1,130 creators, and has recorded upwards of 35,000 open chat sessions. The core functionality revolves around customizable chat interactions. Users can select any character card from the public library and start a conversation immediately. Each chat session can be tailored extensively: users can adjust model parameters (such as temperature, top-p, repetition penalty, and context length), modify conversation style presets (e.g., descriptive, concise, narrative), and customize the visual appearance of the chat interface (including theme colors, background images, and font sizes). The platform provides full control over privacy – chats are private by default, and users have the ability to back up their conversation history locally or delete it permanently at any time. A key feature is the open character card system. Cards are community-created and shared without restriction. Users can browse, search, and filter cards by category (e.g., fantasy, sci-fi, historical, original), popularity, or creator. The platform includes a built-in card creator tool that allows anyone to design their own characters by specifying name, personality, backstory, appearance, speech patterns, and sample dialogue.
