About this website
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria, abbreviated SON, is the federal government agency responsible for establishing and enforcing standards for products manufactured, imported and sold in Nigeria, established by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act and headquartered in Abuja with offices across all thirty-six states of Nigeria. SON develops Nigerian Industrial Standards covering product specifications for building materials, electrical and electronic products, food and beverages, textiles, chemicals, automotive parts and industrial equipment. The agency operates the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, known as MANCAP, which requires locally manufactured products to undergo testing and certification before being sold in the Nigerian market, and the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme, known as SONCAP, which requires imported goods to be tested and certified in their country of origin before shipment to Nigeria. SON also operates product testing laboratories in Lagos, Enugu and Kaduna, investigates consumer complaints about substandard products, and conducts market surveillance to remove dangerous and counterfeit goods from circulation.
