About this website
Stirling PDF is a free and open-source web-based application for performing various operations on PDF documents. Created by James Stirling and first released in 2023, the project quickly became one of the fastest-growing open-source projects, with over 50,000 stars on code repositories within its first year. The application is built with Java (Spring Boot) and provides over 50 PDF manipulation features in a clean, self-hostable interface. Key features: merge and split: combine multiple PDF files into one, or split a PDF into individual pages or page ranges. Rotate, reorder, and delete pages with a visual page preview interface. Convert: convert between PDF and other formats including images (PNG, JPEG, TIFF to PDF and vice versa), Word (DOCX), PowerPoint (PPTX), HTML, and Markdown. OCR: optical character recognition to make scanned PDFs searchable, powered by Tesseract OCR supporting over 60 languages. Security: add and remove passwords, set permissions (print, copy, edit), watermark PDFs with text or images, and digitally sign documents. Compression: reduce PDF file size while maintaining acceptable quality, with configurable compression levels. Editing: add text, images, shapes, and annotations directly on PDF pages. Crop and adjust page margins. Headers and footers: add page numbers, dates, and custom text to all pages. Forms: fill, flatten, and extract PDF form data. Self-hosted: runs locally via Docker, no data leaves your server. Supports dark mode and multi-language interface (over 25 languages). Enterprise features: SSO (SAML, OIDC), role-based access control, and database persistence. Java/Spring Boot. GPL-3.0.
