About this website

Suricata is a high-performance, open-source network threat detection engine that combines intrusion detection system (IDS), intrusion prevention system (IPS), and network security monitoring (NSM) capabilities into a single platform. Developed by the Open Information Security Foundation (OISF), a non-profit organization funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and commercial supporters including CounterFlow and Stamus Networks, Suricata has become one of the most widely deployed network security engines, used by enterprises, government agencies, and managed security service providers (MSSPs) worldwide. Unlike signature-only systems like Snort, Suricata leverages protocol-aware deep packet inspection to understand application-layer protocols (HTTP, TLS, DNS, SMB, FTP, SSH, and dozens more), extracting metadata and detecting anomalies at the protocol level rather than just matching raw byte patterns. Key features include: multi-threaded architecture (Suricata can process packets across multiple CPU cores in parallel, achieving throughput of 10Gbps and beyond on commodity hardware), full PCAP file logging and reconstruction (capturing full packet payloads for forensic analysis), protocol parsing and metadata extraction (HTTP request and response headers, TLS certificate details, DNS queries and responses, SMB file transfers, and more), file extraction (automatically extracting transferred files from network traffic for malware analysis), support for both IDS mode (passive monitoring via port mirroring) and IPS mode (active inline blocking via NFQ or AF_PACKET), EVE JSON output (a unified, machine-readable JSON event format for easy integration with SIEM systems like ELK, Splunk, and Elastic Security), and compatibility with Snort rules (importing and running existing Snort rule sets). As of 2026, Suricata has over 5,000 stars.
