About this website
Tails (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) is a portable operating system designed to preserve privacy and anonymity, running entirely from a USB stick or DVD and leaving no trace on the host computer. Developed since 2009 and based on Debian GNU/Linux, Tails routes all internet traffic through the anonymous network, and is recommended by Edward Snowden, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and numerous journalist organizations. Key features include: amnesic (all data is stored in RAM and wiped when the computer shuts down, leaving no files, browsing history, or settings on the host machine), incognito (all network connections are forced through the anonymity overlay network, preventing ISP and local network surveillance), live system (boots from USB without modifying the host operating system, usable on borrowed or public computers), built-in applications (Firefox-based browser configured for anonymity, Thunderbird email with Enigmail for GnuPG encryption, OnionShare for anonymous file sharing, KeePassXC password manager, LibreOffice, GIMP, Audacity, and PiTivi video editor), persistent storage (optional encrypted persistent volume on the USB stick for saving files, settings, and cryptographic keys across reboots), MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit to strip identifying metadata from documents and images), secure deletion (nwipe for securely erasing disks), and self-destruct on unplugging.
