About this website
Tasmota is an open-source alternative firmware for ESP8266 and ESP32 based smart devices, especially those originally shipped with closed-source cloud-dependent firmware like Sonoff, Shelly, and Tuya devices. Originally created by Theo Arends in 2017 as Sonoff-Tasmota, the project has over 22,000 stars and powers millions of smart home devices worldwide. Key features: replaces manufacturer cloud-dependent firmware with fully local control, eliminating dependency on external cloud services and improving privacy. MQTT protocol for home automation integration with Home Assistant, openHAB, Domoticz, and Node-RED. Web interface for device configuration, control, and monitoring without requiring a hub. Over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates via web interface for remote maintenance. Rules engine for creating automation logic directly on the device (timers, thresholds, conditional triggers). Support for hundreds of sensors and devices including relays, dimmers, LED strips, energy monitors, temperature sensors, and environmental sensors. Timer and schedule system for time-based automation. HTTP and JSON API for programmatic control. Console interface for advanced configuration via serial or web. Multi-relay and multi-sensor support on a single device. Zigbee2Tasmota (Z2T) for using ESP32 devices as Zigbee coordinators. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) gateway for proxied device data. Bluetooth mesh support. Thermostat and PID controller modes. Power monitoring and energy statistics. Consular and grouping for multi-device management. Berry scripting language for advanced automation on ESP32.
