ToonComposer is a generative AI tool designed to automate the labor-intensive stages of traditional anime production. Traditional animation requires skilled artists to manually draw keyframes, in-between frames, and apply colorization—a process that can take hours or days for a single sequence. ToonComposer operates at the post-keyframing stage, meaning it takes the keyframes (the most important poses or scenes) created by an artist and automatically generates the missing in-between frames, while also handling smooth transitions and consistent colorization. The system uses deep learning models trained on large-scale anime data to understand motion dynamics, character proportions, and stylistic consistency. Users only need to provide a small set of sketch-like keyframes or even rough hand-drawn lines; ToonComposer then produces a full sequence of cartoon-quality frames with coherent motion and vibrant colors. The tool supports various anime styles and allows customization of character appearances, backgrounds, and effects. It can also refine rough sketches into clean line art, apply automatic shading, and maintain temporal coherence across frames. Beyond inbetweening, ToonComposer offers features such as style transfer (e.g., converting a real-world photo into an anime-style frame), motion interpolation for smoother playback, and semi-automatic lip-syncing for character dialogue.
