About this website
Vaultwarden (formerly Bitwarden_RS) is an unofficial, self-hosted, lightweight implementation of the Bitwarden Server API written in Rust. Created by Daniel Garcia, it provides full compatibility with official Bitwarden clients (mobile apps, browser extensions, desktop apps, and web vault) while using dramatically fewer resources than the official C# .NET-based Bitwarden server. The entire server runs as a single binary with a footprint of under 30MB RAM and no external dependencies beyond an optional database. Key features include: full Bitwarden API compatibility (all Bitwarden clients connect without modification), password vault with strong AES-256 bit encryption, end-to-end encryption (zero-knowledge architecture where the server never sees plaintext passwords), organization support for shared vaults with collections and groups, Bitwarden Send (encrypted text and file sharing with expiration and access limits), emergency access (trusted contacts with timed access requests), password generator with configurable policies, two-factor authentication (TOTP, Duo, YubiKey OTP, FIDO2/WebAuthn, email, Duo Push, email), single sign-on (SAML 2.0, OpenID Connect), admin panel with diagnostic tools, directory sync (LDAP, Active Directory, Azure AD, Okta, OneLogin), event log auditing, custom icons and favicon fetching, and multi-database support (SQLite for single-user, MySQL/MariaD and PostgreSQL for organizations). As of 2026, version 1.33+ has over 42,500 stars, licensed under AGPL-3.0.
