About this website
The Wine Institute, headquartered in San Francisco, is the public policy advocacy group for the California wine industry, founded in 1934 following the repeal of Prohibition. The organization represents over one thousand California wineries and affiliated businesses that collectively produce approximately eighty-five percent of all American wine and generate over forty billion dollars in retail sales annually. California is the fourth largest wine producer in the world after Italy, France, and Spain, and the Wine Institute serves as the industry voice before the California state legislature, the federal government, and international regulatory bodies on matters including direct-to-consumer wine shipping laws, alcohol excise tax policy, wine labeling regulations, pesticide use and environmental compliance, and international trade barriers affecting wine exports. Through the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, a subsidiary organization, the Wine Institute operates a third-party certified sustainability program that covers over fifty percent of California's total winegrape acreage, addressing water conservation, energy efficiency, soil health, carbon emissions, and social responsibility practices across vineyard and winery operations.
