YugabyteDB

YugabyteDB is a distributed SQL database that combines PostgreSQL compatibility with cloud-native horizontal scalability, designed for modern applications that require high availability, fault tolerance, and global data distribution. Founded by Kannan Muthukkaruppan and a team of former Facebook and Amazon engineers, the database uses a distributed storage layer inspired by Google Spanner to shard tables automatically across multiple nodes while maintaining full ACID transaction semantics. Customers include Kroger, Shopify, General Motors, Wells Fargo, Netskope, Plume, and ComplyAdvantage. The database is 100 percent open source under the Apache 2.0 license, with commercial editions adding enterprise features like point-in-time recovery and enhanced security controls.
