About this website

Appwrite is an open-source backend-as-a-service platform founded by Eldad Fux in 2019, headquartered in Tel Aviv, providing a comprehensive set of backend APIs and services including authentication, database management, file storage, cloud functions, real-time messaging, and scheduled tasks, designed as an open-source alternative to Google Firebase with support for both self-hosted deployment through Docker and managed cloud hosting, adopted by over eight hundred thousand developers and companies including BMW, Dell, and HP for their application backends. The database service provides a document-oriented database with collections, documents, and attributes supporting string, integer, float, boolean, email, url, datetime, enumeration, relationship, and IP address types, with indexes for fast querying, permissions at the document and collection level, and query operations including filtering, sorting, pagination, cursor-based pagination, and relation expansion, while the real-time subscriptions push document changes to connected clients through WebSocket. The authentication system supports email and password, magic URLs, anonymous auth, phone authentication with OTP, OAuth2 providers including Google, GitHub, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, and GitLab, JWT authentication for custom backends, and team-based access management with roles including owner, member, and custom roles, with multi-factor authentication through TOTP authenticator apps. The storage service provides file upload, download, and management with automatic image manipulation including crop, resize, border, rotate, blur, quality, and format conversion through the image transformation API. The functions support serverless code execution in multiple runtimes. The messaging for push notifications, SMS, and email. Designed for application developers.
