Originally launched as Ask Jeeves in 1996 by founders David Warthen and Garrett Gruener in Berkeley, California, this was one of the internet's first question-answering search engines. The service was named after P.G. Wodehouse's fictional valet Jeeves, conceived as a digital butler who could answer any question in natural English. Unlike keyword-based search engines of its era, the platform processed full questions typed in plain language, attempting to match them with relevant web pages. IAC (InterActiveCorp) acquired the company in 2005 and rebranded it the following year. The platform competed alongside first-generation search engines including AltaVista, Lycos, and Excite during the dot-com era. After nearly thirty years, IAC discontinued the search business in 2025, publishing a farewell page celebrating three decades of curiosity-driven search. The natural language query approach pioneered here influenced later voice assistants and conversational search technologies. At its peak, the site attracted tens of millions of monthly visitors and was among the top ten most-visited web properties in the United States. The brand's character Jeeves became a pop culture icon recognized by millions of internet users worldwide, appearing in marketing campaigns and merchandise throughout the early 2000s. Today the farewell page stands as a monument to early web search history, reminding visitors of how finding information online has evolved from asking a virtual butler to modern AI-powered conversational interfaces that took the original concept further than its creators ever imagined.
