BioRender is a web-based scientific illustration and figure creation platform designed specifically for researchers, educators, and students in the life sciences. Its primary function is to enable users to quickly produce publication-ready figures, diagrams, graphs, and slides without requiring any graphic design expertise. The platform provides access to an extensive, curated library of over 40,000 scientifically accurate, editable icons and templates covering fields such as molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, neuroscience, biochemistry, cell biology, and more. Users can search for specific molecules, pathways, cell types, or experimental setups, then drag and drop icons onto a canvas to build custom visuals. Beyond static illustration, BioRender offers several specialized tools. The AI-powered feature can generate a first draft of a protocol timeline or flowchart based on a user’s written methods, converting text into a structured, editable visual. Another module, BioRender Graphing (launched in 2024), allows users to import experimental data and create statistical graphs—such as bar charts, scatter plots, and line graphs—that match the same visual style as their figures. Graphs can be directly embedded into figures or slides, supporting a unified look for manuscripts and presentations. The platform also supports collaboration: multiple users can work on the same figure in real time, leave comments, and share projects via a link. Figures can be exported in high-resolution formats (PNG, TIFF, SVG, PDF) suitable for journal submission, with options to adjust dpi, color mode, and labeling style.
