About this website
Bitwig Studio is a professional digital audio workstation (DAW) and live performance software developed by Bitwig GmbH, a company founded in 2009 in Berlin, Germany by former Ableton developers including Renke Bese and Claes Johansson. The team included key developers from Ableton Live who wanted a next-generation DAW with a more modular architecture. First released in April 2014 after 5 years of development. Key features: multi-platform: one of the few professional DAWs with native Linux support alongside Windows and macOS. Clip Launcher and Arranger: dual workflow combining a session/clip-based view for improvisation and live performance, and a traditional timeline-based arranger for linear composition. Operators: the signature feature that transforms clips and notes through mathematical operations including Chance (randomized triggering), Recurrence (pattern repetitions), Iterate (step-sequencer behavior), and Echo (note repeats). These can be stacked and nested. The Grid: a fully modular sound design environment with over 180 modules (oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, effects) patched together with virtual cables. Poly Grid for polyphonic instruments and FX Grid for effects. MPE support: full MIDI Polyphonic Expression for expressive controllers like the ROLI Seaboard. Modulation system: universal modulation where any parameter can be modulated by any modulator. Hardware integration: CV/gate output for modular synthesizers. VST2, VST3, and CLAP plugin support. Version 5.x added comping, stacked clips, and audio editing improvements. C++/JavaScript. Proprietary.
