About this website

BorgBackup (short: Borg) is a deduplicating backup program that provides space-efficient storage of backups through compression, authenticated encryption, and deduplication of identical data chunks across all archives. The deduplication technology operates at the block level using content-defined chunking, meaning that two successive backups of the same data only store the differences, drastically reducing both storage requirements and backup time. Users can choose from multiple compression algorithms including lz4 for speed, zstd for balanced compression, zlib for compatibility, lzma for maximum compression, or no compression. Security is ensured through client-side authenticated encryption using AES-256-CTR with HMAC-SHA-256 or AES-256-GCM, protecting backup data both in transit and at rest. Backups can be mounted as filesystems using FUSE, allowing users to browse and restore individual files without extracting entire archives. BorgBackup optionally detects and erases known attack patterns through a扣hunk-based approach. The software runs on Linux, macOS, and BSD operating systems, and the project offers a BSD license for maximum flexibility. With a large, active open source community and robust documentation, BorgBackup is widely deployed in both personal and enterprise environments where reliable, efficient, and secure backups are essential for data protection and disaster recovery strategies.
