About this website

Crossplane is an open-source Kubernetes add-on that enables platform engineers to assemble infrastructure from multiple providers using Kubernetes-native APIs, treating cloud resources as Kubernetes custom resources. Created by Jared Watts and Muvaffak Onus at Upbound in 2018, donated to the CNCF in 2020, with over 10,000 stars as of 2026. Key features include: Kubernetes-native infrastructure (provision and manage cloud infrastructure including databases, buckets, queues, and networks using kubectl and Kubernetes manifests, treating infrastructure as code via Custom Resource Definitions), provider model (extensible provider system with over 50 providers for AWS, Azure, GCP, Alibaba Cloud, Equinix Metal, Rook, Helm, Terraform, and Kubernetes-native resources), composition (compose multiple low-level infrastructure resources into a single high-level custom resource, enabling developers to request complete application stacks with a single API call), XRD (Composite Resource Definitions for defining custom infrastructure APIs with schema validation, enabling platform teams to create opinionated infrastructure abstractions), RBAC (Kubernetes-native Role-Based Access Control for infrastructure provisioning permissions, enabling fine-grained delegation of cloud resource creation), reconciliation (continuous reconciliation loop ensures infrastructure state matches desired state, automatically repairing drift and configuration changes), GitOps compatible (works with ArgoCD, FluxCD, and other GitOps tools for declarative infrastructure management via Git repositories), managed resources (fine-grained cloud resource types including RDS instances, S3 buckets, IAM roles, VPCs, subnets, and security groups), and Crossplane Enterprise (Upbound Cloud managed Crossplane with enhanced features including multi-tenancy, audit logging, and provider marketplace).
