Docusaurus is an open-source static site generator for building documentation websites, created by Joel Marcey and Eric Nakagawa at Facebook, now Meta, in 2017, providing a React-powered framework for creating versioned documentation sites with Markdown content, MDX for embedding React components in documentation, built-in search, internationalization, and blog functionality, adopted by over sixty thousand projects including React Native, Babel, Jest, Redux, Create React App, and thousands of open-source projects and companies for their product documentation. The documentation features include automatic versioning that creates separate documentation sets for different product versions, with a version selector dropdown enabling users to switch between versions, sidebar generation from file system structure with customizable ordering, categories, and collapsible sections, table of contents generation from heading structure, and next and previous navigation between documentation pages, providing a professional documentation experience with minimal configuration. The MDX support enables embedding interactive React components directly in Markdown content, allowing live code examples, interactive demos, diagrams, and reusable component patterns within documentation pages, with the live code playground through the live codeblock plugin enabling editable, runnable code examples that readers can modify and see results instantly. The theming system uses Infima CSS framework with customizable colors, fonts, spacing, and dark mode support, with the ability to override any component through swizzling.
